What's your next screenwriting milestone? (And Script Club info inside!)

Hey, it's Naomi with your weekly screenwriting memo! Today's topic...

The 5th annual "what's your screenwriting goal?" email

This really is one of my favorite emails to send each year, because I love to hear what you're writing, and what milestones you're working toward!

If you've been receiving the Write+Co. weekly memo for a while, this will all be familiar (but I hope still fun). And if it's your first time hearing of this New Year tradition, allow me to explain...

I'd like to offer a little help with your 2025 screenwriting goals, by providing some friendly (and free!) accountability.

All you have to do is reply to this email with your next screenwriting milestone or goal, and the date you plan to complete it in 2025.

Then I’ll check in with you sometime before your deadline to see if you're on track to achieve it. But only if you want me to, of course. Just a friendly nudge!

You won’t know when that check-in email is coming, so hopefully you’ll be incentivized to stay on task. 😊

Maybe you're going to finish your current work in progress by January 31st. Maybe you're going to write for 10 minutes every day for 100 days to build your writing habit. Or maybe your goal is to submit applications for three fellowship programs by June.

Whatever it is, I’d love to hear what's coming up for you!

Sound good? If you're in, reply to this email with:

  • The screenwriting goal you’re going to achieve.
  • The date you will complete it.
  • Yes or No to a check-in. (Even if you don’t want me to follow up, I’d still love to see what you're planning to work on this year.)

So what's your screenwriting goal?

Whatever it is... Declare it. Make it real. And then let's work toward accomplishing it.

In the new year you'll continue to get a screenwriting craft article or resource from me each week. I always hope the emails I send help you in some way. So if there's anything screenwriting-related you'd like to read more about or that would help you reach your goal, please let me know. No issue is too big or too small.

Happy New Year. I can't wait to hear from you!

Naomi

👉 P.S. A couple other things you may be looking for:

1️⃣ Script Club is coming up! If you want to read more screenplays this year, or learn more from your reading, then join me on January 12th for the first Script Club of 2025.

During the Zoom session, I'll offer a quick breakdown of the script's structure and how the story works, and then I'll open it up to you for any lessons from the script you'd like to share. So, read the script with your antennae open to useful takeaways and tips that you might want to apply to your own writing.

Get the Zoom link and the screenplay here. (It's a free event, and no registration required.)

2️⃣ The Writers' Room workshop I mentioned a couple weeks ago is also coming up soon.

It will run five Sundays starting January 26th and will be very interactive and highly personalized, with each writer deciding what they'll accomplish by the end of the workshop, and receiving feedback, help, or input as needed from myself and the group each week. (Fun!)

You could rewrite a whole screenplay over the 5 weeks, or develop an outline for a brand new idea and characters, or pitch entirely different ideas and beat sheets each week as we go. It's up to you, and I'm here to help. We'll spend the first session figuring out what to aim for and coming up with a plan! Check next Friday's email for all the details and a signup link.

Until next time!
